What We Are Learning! |

Religion: Children in first grade should be able to correctly make the Sign of the Cross, say the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be. We learn about Jesus and the stories that He told. We also learn about Mass and the Sacraments.
Math: We count and explore numbers everyday. We add and subtract and skip count by 2, 5 and 10. We learn how to count money and how to tell time. Count all the doors in your house. Is it an even or an odd number?
Reading: We read everyday at school and for a minimum of ten minutes everyday at home. An excellent television program that helps kids learn to read is Between the Lions. Watch it on PBS (check schedule for days and times) and get wild about reading!
Writing: We write stories everyday! Write about something you did today or find some family pictures and write a sentence for each one.
Phonics: We study letter sounds and vowel sounds. Look for objects in your home. Can you say the vowel sound you hear and whether it is long or short?
Spelling: Children in first grade need to know and be able to recognize the letters of the alphabet in both uppercase and lowercase. This knowledge helps students achieve success in spelling and reading. Select lowercase letters at random and identify them. Can you write all of the lowercase letters?
