First grade students participate in the BOOK IT! Reading Program from October through March. This six month program motivates children to read and helps develop a positive, enthusiastic attitude toward reading.

Students in first grade have a Pot Luck Party in September. Each student brings a food that begins with the same letter as his/her first or last name. They eat almost everything from A to Z!

Just before Christmas, the students in 1B read The Gingerbread Man story. Then, they make gingerbread man cookies and one of the cookies runs away! Out of the area relatives and friends who see him send post cards to the class from him with information about his location and adventures.

Students in first grade celebrate the 100th Day of School in February. They count to 100 by ones, twos, fives, tens, and twenty-fives, share collections of 100, make 100 things books, make a cookie with 100 chocolate chips, read several 100 day stories, and make necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal. The students read a poem with 100 words and go home 100 days smarter!

On March 17, 1B students participate in a Lucky Charms internet project. They join school students all over the United States. They sort, count and compare the marshmallow charms found in Lucky Charms cereal. For more information about internet projects or to see our results from the past, visit

www.JenuineTech.com and click on Projects.

Students in first grade collect used eyeglasses during the month of February. This community service project helps needy people around the world by improving their lives with better vision. During the month of May, first grade students collect old and damaged American flags for a Flag Retirement Ceremony.
