Oct 27th:
Students are finishing up their bowls today. After they are finished weaving their bowl, they still tie the last string to whatever string is closest to it ti secure it. Students will then use their crayons to carefully color the styrofoam edges and the bottom of the bowl. Students that finish early will be doing a paper weaving.
*** We will be starting a new project next week. Students will need a piece of paper and a pencil. I will try to live stream, but I need to talk to the 2nd grade teachers first to see the best way to do that. Stay tuned...
Oct 6:
Today, I demonstrated to the students how to begin weaving their bowl. I also demonstrated how to tie a basic knot, when they add a new piece of yarn on. Most students were only able to weave 1 or 2 pieces of yarn. before class was over.

Sept 29:
I introduced the students to the concept of weaving today. They were shown 2 videos. I stopped the first video, and expained what was going on. I did record myself doing this, but I am still including the video link, in case the video on the smartboard didnt show up well in the video itself. The 2nd video link is showing how raw wool gets turned into yarn, and then how the yarn can be dyed using traditional materials. FYI... The cactus bugs create a red dye. The color comes from the color in their hard shell bodies, not from their blood.
After watching the video, students will trim a V into each slit. This is so the yarn doesnt get snagged on the corner of the cuts. If you needs a styrofoam bowl, please email me to let me know. I got the larger styrofoam bowls at the doller general store in NC. I cut 7 slits in the bowl, using an exact knife. The slits go from the edge of the bowl, to the flat, center part.
We will begin to weave next week.
